A Tax Return that was filed with the wrong mailing address does not need to be amended and should not be amended. Instead, the preparer or taxpayer should notify the IRS as soon as possible by completing one of the forms below:
- To correct the address for an Individual (1040) return, fill out the IRS Change of Address Form 8822.
- To correct a Business address, fill out the IRS Change of Address Form 8822-B.
After the form has been completed, submit it by mailing it to one of the addresses listed on the second page of Form 8822 or on the first page of Form 8822-B.
Note: The IRS could take 4-6 weeks to process a change of address.
