Here's how to file a federal individual tax return with a filing status of MFJ but two state tax returns with filing status of MFS in TaxSlayer Pro.
File the federal MFJ return
First prepare and file the MFJ federal return. There's no need to create the state return, but if you do create it ensure it's not marked for electronic filing.
After filing the federal return, whether by e-file or mail, print a copy for reference purposes.
Prepare and file the taxpayer's MFS state return
For the first of the two MFS state returns, start with the original taxpayer following these steps:
- Remove all of the spouse's information from the federal return.
- Change the filing status to Married Filing Separate (MFS).
- Select the state return and complete it.
- File the state return, whether by e-file or mail, then print a copy for reference purposes.
- Exit the return.
Prepare and file the spouse's MFS state return
After preparing and filing the original taxpayer's MFS state return, prepare a new federal and state return for the spouse:
- Create a federal return for the spouse with MFS filing status, entering the spouse's information as appropriate.
- Create the MFS state return for the spouse.
- File the state return, whether by e-file or mail, then print a copy for reference purposes.
Print copies for reference and for the archives
Of course, printing the return can mean printing to paper as well as to PDF, but however you archive your work you'll want to retain a copy of all three returns that were filed (federal MFJ return plus two state MFS returns) for reference purposes.
