A fiscal year corporation filing New Jersey Form CBT-100 on the wrong year's form will receive the following reject:
Reject Code: 200902 | Category: DBValidation | Severity: REJECT
Header Return Period End Date Missing/Invalid
New Jersey Corporation Business Tax returns and payments, except estimated payments, are due the 15th day of the fifth month following corporation's accounting year. If the due date falls on a weekend or a legal holiday, the return and payment are due on the following business day.
While the ending month of the accounting period for federal returns and New Jersey returns will match, the tax return year for the federal and state returns may differ. New Jersey requires Form CBT-100 for a corporation with a fiscal year end date from July 31 to November 30 to be filed on the following year's tax form. The New Jersey corporate return rejecting with code 200902 has been prepared on the wrong year's form.
Thus, for example, a corporation with a fiscal year beginning September 1, 2024 and ending August 31, 2025 files its 2024 federal return on the 2024 Form 1120 but files its 2024 New Jersey return on the 2025 Form CBT-100.
New Jersey requires Form CBT-100 to be electronically filed. If the tax forms a fiscal year corporation needs aren't available yet in TaxSlayer Pro, the corporation can file an extension request at the New Jersey Division of Taxation website here.
