Missouri allows a property tax credit for certain senior citizens and 100% disabled individuals for a portion of what was paid in real estate taxes or in rent during the tax year. The maximum amount of the credit for a renter is $750 and $1,100 for a homeowner that pays real estate taxes, and the credit is calculated based on the amount of rent or property tax paid and the total of both taxable and nontaxable household income.
Filing statuses
Unlike Form MO-1040, Form MO-PTS has three filing statuses:
- Single - This status consists of Form MO-1040 filing statuses Single, Head of Household, and Qualifying Widower.
- Married - Filing Combined
- Married - Married - Living Separate for Entire Year
Qualifications

Age or Disability - One of the following must be true:
- The taxpayer is age 65 or older;
- The taxpayer is age 60 or older and receiving surviving spouse benefits;
- The taxpayer is 100% disabled.
- The taxpayer paid rent or real estate taxes on the home they occupied. If the taxpayer rents from a facility, it must have paid property tax for them to qualify.
- Single and married filing separate - Total household income must be less than or equal to $27,200 for a renter and $30,000 for a full-year owner.
- Married filing combined - Total household income must be less than or equal to $34,000 if they owned their home the entire year and $29,200 if they owned their home for less than a full year.
Household Income
For the purpose of calculating the property tax credit, household income includes all of the following kinds of income and losses:
- Wages, interest, and dividends;
- Social security and railroad retirement;
- Public and private pensions and annuities;
- Veteran payments and benefits unless the claimant or spouse is a 100 percent disabled as a result of military service;
- Public relief, public assistance, and unemployment benefits received;
- SSI, TANF, and/or child support payments received;
- Rental income;
- Non-business losses.

Property Tax Credit Information (MO-PTS/PTC) - Answer YES to the confirmation question.
- Basic Information - Select one of the four age and disability qualifications, indicate if the taxpayer is a renter or owner, and if the spouse is deceased select their name and enter their date of death.
- Household Income - Enter any amount of nontaxable income or nonbusiness losses in the fields provided.
- Property Tax Information - Enter information about the property taxes paid.
- Enter Form CRP - If the taxpayer is a renter, enter the information on their Form MO-CRP.
- Attach a PDF of Supporting Documents for Form MO-PTS/PTC - Certain claims on the form require a document to be attached. Attach PDF copies of the required documents here. The file format must be PDF.
- Do you want to print Form MO-PTC instead of MO-PTS? - A taxpayer qualifies to use Form MO-PTC instead if they aren't required to file a Missouri income tax return. See here for more information about Form MO-PTC.
