When a nonresident of West Virginia sells real estate within the state, the income must be reported on the West Virginia income tax return. The tax withheld can be included as a payment.
In TaxSlayer Pro, you will enter the tax withholdings in the federal return and then indicate in the nonresident West Virginia return why they were withheld.
To report the West Virginia tax withheld from the sale of real estate, from the Main Menu of the federal tax return (Form 1040) select:
- Payments
- Other State Withholdings - Select New. Enter WV and the amount of tax withheld for West Virginia.
From the West Virginia Tax Return Menu select:
- Payments
- Is withholding from nonresident sale of real estate? - Select Yes.
