Form 1041 filed as a grantor type trust will reject if the grantor's taxpayer ID number (whether an SSN or an EIN) is missing:
Reject Code: X0000-005
The XML data has failed schema validation. cvc-complex-type.2.4.a. Invalid content was found starting with element 'TaxableIncomeGrp'. One of '{"http://www.irs.gov/efile":SSN, "http://www.irs.gov/efile":EIN}' is expected.
In client status as well as on an acknowledgement report you may also see a similarly worded validation error:
The element 'GrantorGrp' in namespace 'http://www.irs.gov/efile' has invalid child element 'TaxableIncomeGrp' in namespace 'http://www.irs.gov/efile'. List of possible elements expected: 'SSN, EIN' in namespace 'http://www.irs.gov/efile'.
To resolve this reject, from the Main Menu of the trust return (Form 1041) select:
- Miscellaneous Statements
- Grantor Trust Statement Menu - Select the grantor information line.
- ID of Grantor - You'll be asked if the grantor is an individual. If they are, select YES, then enter their SSN. Otherwise, select NO and enter its EIN.
