Desktop: New York - E-file Blocks for NY Driver's License

For the individual tax return, the state of New York State requires either of the following for the taxpayer and for the spouse (if applicable):

  • the 9-digit driver license or non-driver ID information, or
  • indication that the individual doesn't have a driver license or non-driver ID.

This requirement applies to driver licenses or non-driver IDs from any state. An NYC Identification Card does not meet the requirement. The card must be state-issued.

If the taxpayer has a driver license or non-driver ID, the following information must be supplied:

  • The 9-digit ID number;
  • The issuing state;
  • The issue date;
  • The expiration date;
  • The first three characters of the document number (for New York State-issued licenses and non-driver IDs only).

If the license information is missing, you will see this message for the person in the return for whom it is missing:

Taxpayer - NY Drivers License must be Numeric and 9 digits in length.

Spouse - NY Drivers License must be Numeric and 9 digits in length.

If the 3-character document ID is missing, you will see this message for the person in the return for whom it is missing:

Taxpayer - NY Document ID is required if Drivers License or State Issued ID is from NY.

Spouse - NY Document ID is required if Drivers License or State Issued ID is from NY.

To correct the driver's license number, from the New York Tax Return Menu select:

  • Personal Information
  • Driver's License Information
  • Taxpayer Drivers License/State Issue Id Information
    Spouse Drivers License/State Issue Id Information - Select the person whose license needs correction.

To correct the document number, from the New York Tax Return Menu select:

  • Personal Information
  • Other Categories
  • Document Number from NYS ID - You will be presented with a field to enter the first three characters of the taxpayer's document number and, if applicable, a field to enter the spouse's document number.
