If a taxpayer filed Form 1040-NR but should have filed Form 1040, you'll need to submit an amended Form 1040. In Form 1040-X, the nonresident return's information will be entered in the Original column.
If you prepared Form 1040-NR in TaxSlayer ProWeb, you'll need to deactivate it so that you can create Form 1040. Before deactivating it, print the entire return for reference purposes.
Here are the steps to follow:
1. Have a printed copy of Form 1040-NR including all supporting forms, schedules, and worksheets for reference. You won't be able to create the new amended Form 1040 without it.
2. Did you prepare Form 1040-NR in TaxSlayer ProWeb?
- Yes - Deactivate the return, then restart it, and when prompted select to remove and create a new return, rather than reactivate the previous return. Enter all the information in the return as it should have been when originally filed.
- No - Create Form 1040, entering all the information in the return as it should have been when originally filed.
4. Once you've finished entering all the information into the return, select 20xx Amended Return from the left side menu, then click GET STARTED. Read the "How To Amend Your Return" instructions if you're not familiar with the process.
5. In the Amended Tax Return - Form 1040-X menu, select Original Federal Return Information and fill in the Original column of Form 1040-X with the appropriate amounts from Form 1040-NR. See here for information on where each menu line in the Original column is derived from Form 1040-NR.
6. If you're electronically filing the amended Form 1040, be sure to select the "Amended Return" button when going to the E-file section.
