Does Montana Tax Military Retirement Income?
For tax years prior to 2024, Montana requires military retirement income to be included in taxable income.
Starting in tax year 2024, Montana's Working Military Retirement Exemption (WMRE) allows resident working military retirees to exclude a portion of their military retirement income from state income tax. This exemption also extends to resident beneficiaries receiving military survivor benefits, allowing portion of their survivor benefits to be exempt from Montana tax.
