Tax for nonresidents and part-year residents of New York is initially determined as if the taxpayer were a full year resident of New York, then the tax is multiplied by an income percentage based on New York source income over total federal income. This calculation can be viewed on Form IT-203 page 3:
To allocate income to New York in the nonresident or part-year resident individual tax return in TaxSlayer Pro, from the New York return menu select:
- New York Taxable Income
- Federal Adjusted Gross Income - Select any line item to allocate amounts to New York.
Note that when you view the New York main menu, or page 1 of the New York tax return, the New York taxable income amount will reflect the Federal AGI amount less the New York standard or itemized deductions and any exemption amounts. The amount of New York state tax is calculated on page 3 of the New York return, as shown above.
