For New York nonresidents and part-year residents, tax is initially determined as if the taxpayer was a resident of New York, then the tax is multiplied by a percentage calculated by dividing New York AGI over Federal AGI. This calculation can be viewed on Form IT-203 page 3. For example:
To allocate income to New York in the nonresident or part-year resident individual tax return in TaxSlayer Pro, from the New York Tax Return Menu select:
- New York Taxable Income
- Federal Adjusted Gross Income - Select any line item to allocate amounts to New York.
In the New York Tax Return Menu, New York Taxable Income equals federal AGI less the New York standard or itemized deductions and any exemption amounts. The amount of New York state tax is calculated on page 3 of the New York return, as shown above.
