The IRS has several rejects for the 6-digit Identity Protection PIN being either missing or incorrect in the individual tax return. The IP PIN changes annually, and the IRS issues IP PINs each year from late December to early January to individuals who have registered to receive one.
An individual who registered for an IP PIN online can retrieve their IP PIN online beginning in early January every year. Otherwise, individuals who registered by mail or in person will receive their IP PIN in the mail on the post card-sized Form CP01A.
If the IRS has issued the taxpayer, spouse, or dependent an IP PIN, it must be included on any tax return they are on filed during the year, whether original or amended, whether for the current year or a prior year. IP PINs are good for one filing year, and once the individual receives their IP PIN from the IRS, any PIN they previously received is obsolete.
Below are the most common rejects you can encounter if an individual in a return has a missing or incorrect IP PIN. To avoid a reject, be sure to ask your clients if anyone on their tax return, whether the taxpayer, the spouse, or a dependent, is registered to receive an annual IP PIN. Additional Information can be found at the end of the article with direct IRS links to obtain or retrieve IP PIN.
