A tax return that includes Form 8936 for the Clean Vehicle Credit could potentially get reject F8936-030:
Reject Code: SA-F8936-030
Schedule A (Form 8936), 'VIN' does not match the e-File database. Please resubmit the return using the correct VIN. If the VIN originally entered is correct, then a binary attachment or [GeneralDependencySmall] with description beginning with "Substantiate VIN" must be present in the return.
There are several reasons why a return can get this reject:
- The vehicle's VIN entered on the form is incorrect - Verify the VIN you entered with the VIN showing on Form 15400 the taxpayer received. If it's correct as entered, attach a PDF copy of Form 15400 to Form 8936.
- The return was filed before the seller had notified the IRS - The clean vehicle dealer may have delayed sending Form 15400 to the IRS via the Energy Credits Online (ECO) website, thus the IRS didn't yet know about the vehicle's sale at the time the tax return was filed.
- This vehicle doesn't qualify for the credit - This is not a qualifying clean vehicle.
If the return continues to get this reject when e-filed, you may have to paper file it, or you can consider filing the return without the credit, then once the dealer has uploaded the vehicle's information to the IRS the return can be amended to include the credit.
The taxpayer should also consider reaching out to the dealer to verify that they uploaded the vehicle's information to the ECO website.
