Reject Code: IRSW2-100820-010
When present, State Income Tax Amount must be a positive or zero and can't exceed Federal Wages.
The state of Maryland rejects a return with reject code IRSW2-100820-010 when the state income tax withholdings on a W-2 exceed the federal wages in Box 1.
There are two reasons why this can occur.
The W-2 includes more than four states so had to be split into multiple W-2s
The usual reason for a return to get Maryland reject code IRSW2-100820-010 is due to having to divide a W-2 into more than one entry due to more than four states being on the W-2, and a W-2 that does not include the state of Maryland will precipitate a reject for each non-Maryland state record on the W-2 that has withholdings. This is a limitation by the state of Maryland in their e-file specifications.
When a W-2 needs to be be divided into multiple entries due to it including more than four states, you may be able to make the Maryland return e-fileable if each W-2 entered includes a state line for Maryland. This means the Maryland wages and withholdings will be divided between all the W-2s, so when creating these entries care will need to be taken to ensure the sum of the Maryland wages and withholdings on all the W-2s equals the original W-2. Dividing the W-2 in this manner, with the goal of being able to electronically file the Maryland return, may not always be possible however, so a Maryland return that continues to reject will have to be mailed.
Keystroke error
If you didn't have to split a W-2 into multiple W-2s, then you may have made a keystroke error entering the W-2. To see if this is the case, from the Federal Section of the tax return (Form 1040) select:
- Income
-
Form W-2 - Select the W-2, looking for an amount entered in the state withholding field that is greater than the federal wages (Box 1):
Correct the W-2 as needed.
If Maryland continues to reject the return, you will have to file it with them in paper form.
