The state of Virginia grants all taxpayers an automatic 6-month extension of time to file their income tax returns. No application for extension is required. However, any tentative tax due must be paid with an extension voucher, Form 760IP, Virginia Automatic Extension Payment Voucher for Individuals, by the original due date for filing the return if paying by check or money order.
Taxpayers must follow the rules for electronic payments. Do not submit Form 760IP if no payment is due or if paying electronically.
To complete Form 760IP, from the Virginia Return menu select:
- Payments
- Enter amount paid with an extension for time to file, if applicable
