When you are working in an individual tax return in TaxSlayer Pro, you will see menu lines for attaching or viewing PDFs. It's important to note the differences between PDFs in PaperCut and PDFs attached to the return.
PDFs in PaperCut
If you have purchased the Premium subscription to TaxSlayer Pro, you have the ability to store documents linked to a tax return. You can store PDFs of the printed return as well as source documents in any format provided by the taxpayer.
These documents are available for viewing from within PaperCut as well as from within the tax return itself:
- To view them in PaperCut, click the PaperCut icon in the tool bar at the top of the TaxSlayer Pro window and select the taxpayer in the Tax Returns tab.
- To view them within the tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-NR), from the main menu of the return select:
- Personal Information
- View Current Year Tax Return PDF(s)
Two things to note about viewing PaperCut documents within the tax return:
- This menu line is a "back door" into PaperCut - the documents you see here aren't attached to the tax return and don't go with the return when it's transmitted.
- While this menu line refers to "PDF(s)", in reality you can view whatever has been saved in PaperCut, which in addition to PDFs may include images as well as spreadsheet or text documents.
PDFs attached to a return
In an individual tax return, PDF is the only document format that can be attached to a tax return, and there are multiple places in a return to attach a PDF when it's needed as a supporting document. There is also a general PDF attachment point here:
- Personal Information
- Other Categories
- Attach PDF Document - Any document you attach here is sent to the IRS along with the return.
Note that PDFs attached to a return aren't viewable in PaperCut because they aren't stored in PaperCut. In summary:
Return attachments go to the IRS - documents stored in PaperCut stay with you.
