California taxpayers in a Registered Domestic Partnership (RDP) may file a federal tax return using the filing status of Single or Head of Household, whichever they qualify for, however for California filing purposes, these taxpayers may use Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately.
To chose the RDP filing status in the California individual tax return in TaxSlayer Pro, from the California Tax Return Menu select:
- Personal Information
- Other Categories
- File Return with RDP - Enter the domestic partner's personal information.
Once the filing status has been changed to RDP the preparer will need to make adjustments to the California return to include the Domestic Partner's income/subtractions/credits etc.
Note: California personal exemptions and the California standard deduction will calculate automatically.
