If a federal S corp return includes depreciation, Alabama Form 20S requires a copy of federal Form 4562 be attached to the return. If the return is being paper filed, then a printed copy of Form 4562 will suffice. If the return is being e-filed, a PDF copy needs to be attached.
If you attempt to mark Form 20S for electronic filing and a PDF copy of Form 4562 is not attached, you will see this message:
Please attach a copy of form 4562 via pdf.
Removing this e-file block consists of two steps:
1. Save a copy of federal Form 4562 in PDF form. From the Main Menu of the federal return (Form 1120-S) select:
- View Results
- Form 4562 - When the PDF copy opens, do the following steps:
- Select the File menu, then Save As...
- Select Choose a Different Folder... and navigate to the folder you'd like it saved to. It doesn't matter where you save it nor what you call it, as the program will rename it according to the state's specifications, but save it in a place where it's easy for you to find, e.g., the Downloads directory or the Desktop. Or, if you have a folder of files specifically for this client you can save it there.
2. Attach the PDF to the Alabama return. From the top level menu of the Alabama S corp return select
- Federal Deductions
- Attach Other Deductions PDF - Navigate to the folder you saved the PDF to. Double-click the file to attach it.
On-screen you'll see an asterisk on the "Attach" menu line indicating that a PDF is attached.
