If the taxpayer is not required to make a payment, because they have already made sufficient
payments on or before the original return due date, the taxpayer does not need to file this form.
If a payment is required and the taxpayer meets an exception for filing electronically and
does not file a federal return as part of a consolidated group, they can submit either
this form or a copy of the federal extension request along with payment on or
before the original due date of the return. If a payment is required and the taxpayer meets an exception for filing electronically and they file the federal return as part of a consolidated group, they must use this form to request an extension. Payment must be made on or before the original due date of
the return.
Desktop – To access the Tennessee Extension, from the main menu of the Tennessee state return select:
- Form 173 Extension Menu
- Enter Extension
Note: Electronic filing is not supported for the state extension. The federal extension payment may be sent electronically, however the state extension will have to be mailed.
