To receive an automatic extension to file the South Carolina income tax returns to October 15, file Form 4868 with the IRS and attach a copy to the South Carolina return. Use this method if no tax is due.
Otherwise, to request an extension to October 15, file Form SC4868, Request for Extension of Time to File South Carolina Individual Income Tax Return. Use this method if tax is due or if no federal extension is filed. To avoid a late-payment penalty, 90% of any tax due must be paid by the original return due date.
To access the SC4868 in the South Carolina individual income tax return in TaxSlayer Pro, from the South Carolina Tax Return Menu select:
- Miscellaneous Forms
- SC Extension of time to File (SC4868)
Note: South Caroline does not support electronic filing for the state extension. The federal extension may be sent electronically, however the state extension will have to be mailed.
