Rhode Island allows an automatic 6-month extension if no payment is due and a federal extension has been filed. If the Rhode Island tax return is being e-filed, a copy of the federal extension request will be attached, otherwise if you are paper filing be sure to attach a copy of federal Form 4868 or electronic acknowledgement received from IRS to the return when submitted.
File Form RI-4868 if payment is due or if a federal extension isn't being filed.
Note that filing for an extension does not extend the time to file Form RI-1040H, Rhode Island Property Tax Relief Claim or Form RI-6238, Rhode Island Residential Lead Paint Credit. These forms must be filed by April 15.
To access the Rhode Island Form RI-4868, from the main menu of the Rhode Island state return select:
- Miscellaneous Forms/Schedules
- RI-4868 Application for Extension
Note: Rhode Island does not support electronic filing of form RI-4868. It must be mailed. The federal extension payment may be sent electronically.
