If the IRS has rejected an individual tax return with code F8962-070, and neither the taxpayer nor anyone else in their household had health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you will need to attach a statement to the return telling the IRS that Form 8962 isn't needed in the return.
To attach this statement to the return in TaxSlayer Pro, do the following steps.
1. In the Personal Information menu answer YES to the question "Health Insurance through the Marketplace/Exchange?". (While this statement isn't strictly true, it's the way to access the Form 8962 menu.)
2. Next, go here:
- Payments, Estimates & EIC
- Premium Tax Credit->PTC (8962)
- ACA Explanation for Not Filing Form 8962.
The two most common explanations are available to select to prefill the statement, either that the taxpayer simply had no insurance, marketplace or otherwise, or the taxpayer had insurance through their employer so had no need for marketplace insurance. A third option allows the taxpayer to include their own ACA Explanation. Select the desired explanation.
The above steps will include the explanation as an attachment to the return, and with that statement attached the return can be e-filed and the reject will be satisfied.
