Reject Code: IRSW2-100820-010
When present, State Income Tax Amount must be a positive or zero and can't exceed Federal Wages.
The state of Maryland rejects a return with reject code IRSW2-100820-010 when the state income tax withholdings on a W-2 exceed the federal wages in Box 1.
There are two reasons why this can occur.
The W-2 includes more than four states so had to be split into multiple W-2s
If you had to split a W-2 into multiple W-2s due to it having more than four states, Maryland doesn't like this procedure and will reject the return. The only recourse is to mail the Maryland return.
Keystroke error
If you didn't have to split a W-2 into multiple W-2s, then you may have made a keystroke error entering the W-2. To see if this is the case, from the main menu of the tax return (Form 1040) select:
- Income
-
Wages, Salaries, Tips (W-2) - Select the W-2, looking for an amount entered in the state withholding field that is greater than the federal wages (Box 1):
Correct the W-2 as needed.
If Maryland continues to reject the return, you will have to file it with them in paper form.
