If a taxpayer contributes to a LA START K12 plan, a portion of the contribution can be subtracted from income on the Louisiana return. For the 2024 tax year, contributions can be claimed up to $2,400 for joint filers ($1,200 for single filers). All earnings on the account are tax deferred and if used for tuition expenses at approved LA schools, the earnings are not taxable.
To enter the deductible portion of the contributions in TaxSlayer Pro, from the Louisiana Return menu select:
- Income Menu (Schedule E)
- Other Exempt Income - Select New.
- START K-12 Contributions - Enter the deductible amount of the contribution that the taxpayer made to the plan. For a couple filing jointly, combine the total contributions made by each spouse.
