IRS Form 8863 is used to figure and claim the education credits, either the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit. These credits are based on adjusted qualified education expenses paid to an eligible postsecondary educational institution and are limited based on Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI).
In the course of completing Form 8863 you are asked to enter the student's eligible expenses. Enter the total of all qualified expenses, both those included and not included on Form 1098-T. If you're unsure if a particular expense qualifies to be included, refer to the Form 8863 instructions.
If expenses are entered beyond those included on Form 1098-T, we recommend entering a Preparer Note in the return detailing the qualified expenses.
Note: This is a guide to entering education expenses into the TaxSlayer ProWeb program. This is not intended as tax advice.
