The tax program will automatically calculate most parts of Form 1040 by the information you enter. If you are trying to recreate a tax return that was done incorrectly, or if you are trying to force the program to accept a figure for a special situation, you may not be able to get the program to calculate the incorrect figures or to adjust for the special situation. The Form 1040 Override allows for an override for certain amounts that are calculated by the program. Once you use the Form 1040 Override, the tax return cannot be electronically filed. It must be mailed to the IRS. For instructions on where to file a paper tax return, click here.
Note: By visiting the override menu, you will automatically mark the return has containing an override and render it unable to be e-filed. If you don't intend to enter an override, don't enter this menu. If you enter this menu by mistake, remove the override.
To override a line on the Form 1040, from the Main Menu of the tax return (Form 1040) select:
- Miscellaneous Forms
- 1040 Override - Select the line item you want to change and enter the amount on that line
To remove the Form 1040 Override if it is no longer necessary, select Remove 1040 Override. You will be prompted, Do you want to Remove the 1040 Override Flag? Answer YES and the Form 1040 Override will be removed.
