TaxSlayer Pro automatically calculates most parts of Form 1040 using the information you enter. If you are trying to recreate a tax return that was done incorrectly, or if you are trying to force the program to accept a figure for a special situation, you may not be able to get the program to calculate the incorrect figures or to adjust for the special situation.
The Form 1040 Override allows you to override certain amounts on Form 1040. Once you enter an override, the tax return cannot be electronically filed. It must be mailed to the IRS. Click here for instructions on where to file a paper tax return.
Note: Visiting the override menu automatically marks the return as containing an override and thus renders it unable to be e-filed. If you don't intend to enter an override, don't visit the 1040 Override menu. If you enter the 1040 Override menu by mistake, be sure to select to remove the override so the return can return to being e-fileable.
Entering an Override
To override a line on the Form 1040, from the Main Menu of the tax return (Form 1040) select:
- Miscellaneous Forms
- 1040 Override - Select the line item you want to change and enter the amount.
Removing an Override
To remove the 1040 Override entirely, from the Main Menu of the tax return (Form 1040) select:
- Miscellaneous Forms
- 1040 Override
- Remove 1040 Override - You will be prompted, Do you want to Remove the 1040 Override Flag? Answer YES.
