When you launch TaxSlayer Pro, it automatically retrieves any federal update plus any update for your state. Additionally, it automatically retrieves any other state updates that you have indicated you want.
Updates should be downloaded and installed on the file server prior to updating workstations.
Updating the File Server
To manually download and install federal and state programs on the file server, from the Quick Menu of TaxSlayer Pro select:
- Updates
- Download/Install Updates
- Available updates are highlighted in red. Select each federal and/or state update that you wish to install, or click the Check All Needed check box to download everything in red.
- Select the Download button
Irrespective of which tab you use to select the state(s) you want, both Business and Individual updates will be installed. Since Texas only appears in the Business tab, to install the Texas business forms you will need to select it from the Business tab if you don't use Check All Needed.
We recommend downloading all states so that you will be ready for any client's return and to avoid having to disrupt the flow of work by having to download a missing state. To download all the states needed, click the Check All Needed check box before selecting the Download button.
Updating a Workstation
Once updates are completed on the File Server you can update the workstations. From the Quick Menu of TaxSlayer Pro select Updates.
This will begin the automatic update process for the workstation. All updates that have been installed on the file server will be copied to the workstation.
Updating a non-networked, standalone workstation
If you have one or more standalone PCs that do not have access to the internet, you can copy the updates to a removable drive on the file server PC and transfer them to the workstation PC.
With the file server PC up to date, from the Quick Menu of TaxSlayer Pro select:
- Updates
- Backup Updates - In the Windows File Explorer window, select the Drive Letter assigned to the removable drive
- Note the File Name. Change it if you wish.
- Click Open to copy the updates to the backup file.
Once the update(s) are copied, eject the removable drive and insert it into the workstation. On the workstation, from the Quick Menu of TaxSlayer Pro select:
- Updates
- Recall Updates - Select the Drive Letter assigned to the removable drive, navigate to the backup file, and double-click it to recall the updates, i.e., make them available for installation.
Once the updates have been recalled from the removable drive, they need to be installed. From the Internet Update Utility menu select Updates. Available updates are highlighted in red. Select the updates you would like to install, then click the Download button.
