Every estate or trust that is required to file Form 1041 must have an EIN. An EIN may be applied for in any of the following ways:
- Apply at the IRS website here. The EIN will be issued immediately once the application information is validated.
- Call 1.800.829.4933 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. in the fiduciary's local time zone.
- Complete Form SS-4 and fax or mail it to the IRS.
If the estate or trust has not received its EIN by the time the return is due, the return will need to be paper filed. Start the return with all zero's and indicate Applied for and the date that the fiduciary applied for the EIN in the heading section before mailing.
