The IRS has added an online tool to their website that helps taxpayers and tax preparers track the status of their amended federal return for the current year and up to three prior years.
Where's My Amended Return can be used approximately 3 weeks after the amended return has been mailed in for processing to:
- confirm that the IRS has received the amended return,
- check the processing status of the amended return,
- and get an estimated completion time for processing the return.
To check the status of an amended return, you will enter the taxpayer's identification number (SSN or ITIN), date of birth, and zip code used to file their most recent tax return. If amended returns for multiple years have been filed, each return can be selected individually from the results.
Certain returns can't be checked at this website:
- Business returns
- Returns with a foreign address
- Carryback applications and claims
- Injured spouse claims
- Form 1040 marked as an amended or corrected return (instead of 1040-X)
- Returns processed by special units such as Examination or Bankruptcy
The status of an amended return can also be determined approximately 3 weeks after it has been mailed by calling the IRS Where's My Amended Return line at 866.464.2050.
