Calling the IRS for taxpayer assistance
The IRS's primary taxpayer assistance line is 800.829.1040. It's possible to speak to a representative via this number.
The IRS won't provide line-by-line assistance, and there are many forms that the IRS will not help with, so if your question concerns one of those forms, you will need to find an alternate source for help.
Tips Before You Call
- The process of getting through to a representative is managed by a computer listening for your voice responses, a system known as "interactive voice response" or IVR. Consider muting your microphone when you are not responding so the IVR isn't distracted by background noise.
- The IVR has canned, repetitive responses to some of your inputs, and based on your responses may continue to probe to see if it's capable of handling your concern without sending you to a representative, so be patient as it guides the call.
- The IVR will ask you to explain why you are calling, so tell it the specific thing you need help with. A non-specific response such as "I need help with my tax return" or "I want to speak to a representative" will not move the call forward, and you'll be asked to provide more detail, so it's best to provide specific detail from the start.
- The IVR will continue to interact with you if it isn't certain your question is not within the range of problems it can handle, so the more detailed your explanation of the issue is, the more quickly you will bypass the initial screening questions and get into the queue.
- Certain keywords in your question, such as the word "business", may result in your call going in a different direction than anticipated, and if it's late enough in the day you may be told to call back the next business day. If this happens to you, hang up and call back, rephrasing the question.
- The queue may be backed up for a long time, so be prepared to wait for a half hour or more. If you're on a mobile phone, consider having it plugged in to avoid the battery dying.
Here's how to get through to a representative
- Call the IRS at 800.829.1040 during their support hours of 7 AM to 7 PM local time Monday to Friday.
- If you prefer Spanish language prompts, you will be prompted to press 9.
- You will be prompted to explain what you need help with. State your question or issue just as you would to a person. For example, "I need to find out if I can claim a dependent", or "I need to find out if I qualify for the child tax credit".
- It may ask for more detail, so restate your question or issue. If you need help with a specific form, tell it you need help completing that form. For example, "I need help with Form 3800."
- Rather than send you to the queue, it may continue to prompt you to press a button for assistance with certain common tasks, such as the status of a refund or getting a transcript. Rather than pressing a button, continue to restate the question or issue you need help with.
Eventually you should get moved forward to the queue. If you hear music on hold and are told the current average wait time, you're in.
