If you are looking at a return's Client Status in TaxSlayer Pro and see duplicate, repetitive acknowledgements for the same return, examine the Batch ID and Submission ID.
It's possible for multiple transmissions to have the same Batch ID, however you can never see the same Submission ID except in the context of a particular submission being processed multiple times. This is unusual though.
Same Batch ID and Submission ID
If the Batch ID and the Submission ID are the same for all duplicate transmissions, this indicates the IRS sent us duplicate acknowledgements.
Same Batch ID multiple times but different Submission IDs
If multiple transmissions have the same Batch ID but different Submission IDs, this indicates TaxSlayer Pro re-sent the return more than once due to the return getting stuck in the e-file process for some reason.
Different Batch ID and Submission ID
If a return was transmitted multiple times but there is no duplication between the Batch IDs and the Submission IDs, this generally indicates the ERO submitted the return multiple times.
The IRS e-file system only allows a taxpayer ID number (SSN, ITIN, or EIN) to be in the e-file space once. When a return is transmitted, whether the federal return only, federal and state returns, or state return only, and before it is acknowledged it is transmitted a second time, typically one or both returns will die as a duplicate. No reject code will be sent. Depending on what was transmitted and when, the state return may die or may get sent to the state for processing.
This scenario reinforces an important general rule regarding electronic filing, and that is to not transmit a return if there is a previous transmission pending acknowledgement.
