An individual tax return that includes Form 8332 will reject with code IND-472 if a required PDF attachment isn't present:
Reject Code: IND-472 | Category: Missing Document | Severity: Reject
For each instance of Form 8332 present in the return, there must be a corresponding binary attachment with description "8332 Signature Document" present.
The return will reject in either of these scenarios:
- The PDF is not attached in the right place.
- The file that is attached is not a PDF.
- The PDF that is attached must be named "8332 Signature Document". (TaxSlayer Pro will take care of naming it correctly in the e-file data.)
The PDF is not attached in the right place
In TaxSlayer Pro, the Form 8332 release or revocation PDF must be attached in the correct place in the program. From the Tax Menu select:
- Personal Information
- Dependents & Qualifying Children - Select the Other button.
- Attach Form 8332-Release of Exemption PDFs - Select New, navigate to and select the PDF to attach.
The file that is attached is not a PDF
Ensure the file you attach is a PDF. It cannot be any other kind of file, such as an image. Additionally, changing a file's extension to PDF does not make the file a PDF and thus won't overcome the reject.
Troubleshooting repeated rejects
If you have attached the file in the correct place and it is a PDF, and the IRS continues to reject the return, you may consider saving it as a PDF in a different manner.
(Although unrelated to the reject itself, to keep the size of the file manageable save the PDF in black and white or grayscale, not color, and at no more than 300 dpi.)
If the return continues to reject, you will have to file it in paper form.
