Reject Code: F7004-904-01
Form 7004, the tax year ending date ('TaxPeriodEndDt' specified in the Return Header) must match the data in the e-file database unless one of the checkboxes in Line 5b - "Initial Return", "Final Return" or "Consolidated return to be filed" is checked.
Reject code F7004-904-01 occurs when the entity's tax year end date as shown on Form 7004 does not match what the IRS is expecting based on its database.
There are several common reasons why an extension request might get this reject:
- The previous tax return was for a fiscal year, but you haven't entered the fiscal year dates.
- The previous tax return was for a calendar year, but you've entered a date range in the fiscal year field.
- This is the business's first year, but you haven't indicated the actual start date and end date along with indication that this is the business's initial return.
Initial Return
If this extension request is for entity's initial year and it was not in operation the entire year, you will need to correct the date entry on Form 7004. In the Form 7004 menu in the entity's return in TaxSlayer Pro, you'll need to first indicate this is not a calendar year entity by selecting Calendar Year and answering No to the question asking if it's for a calendar year.
Next, you need to enter the fiscal year beginning and ending dates as follows:
- Beginning date - The beginning date should be the entity's official start date.
- End date - The end date should be 12-31-20xx if it's a calendar year entity, or the last day of the month other than December if it's a fiscal year entity.
Finally, after entering the dates select Reason if Tax Year Less Than 12 Months and choose "Initial Return" to clarify why the return is covering less than a full year.
Caveats
- If this is not the first year the business is filing a return, you will need to verify with the business if they operate on a fiscal year or a calendar year.
- The beginning and ending dates of 1/1/20xx to 12/31/20xx are not to be entered in the fiscal year field. Those are the dates for a calendar year entity.
- If the dates entered are correct, you will need to contact the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933 to find out why the extension is rejecting for the date range.
