A validation error beginning with "The 'http://www.irs.gov/efile:MethodUsedToFigureTaxCd' element is invalid" occurs when an electronically filed amended return (Form 1040-X) has an invalid entry on Line 6 for the method used to figure tax. There are seven possible values for the method used, and in the above example "249" is incorrectly specified.
To correct the validation error, from the Main Menu of the tax return (Form 1040), select:
- Miscellaneous Forms
- Amended Return (1040-X)
- Follow the instructions depending on the year:
- Tax Year 2020 and forward - Answer NO to the question about re-pulling data to the Original Column. Doing so will instead re-pull the entries into the Correct Column of Form 1040-X and should pull the correct method being used to figure the tax.
- Tax Year 2019 and prior:
- Edit 1040X Menu
- 20xx Amended Return
- Corrected Column - Selecting this will re-pull the entries into the Correct Column of Form 1040-X and should pull the correct method being used to figure the tax.
- Select the View icon in the toolbar at the top of the window to verify the method indicated on Line 6 is one of the methods below.
