TaxSlayer Pro is designed to give the taxpayer the greatest tax advantage of either the standard deduction or itemized deductions. There are situations where you may want or need to have the taxpayer use itemized deductions, even though it may not give them the greatest tax benefit.
Additionally, if the taxpayer is a dual-status alien they must itemize; they cannot use standard deduction.
In order to have the program choose itemized deductions over standard deductions, from the Main Menu of the Tax Return (Form 1040) select:
- Personal Information
- Other Categories
- Force Itemized Deductions or Dual-Status Return - Select whether you wish to force itemizing or to indicate the return is for a dual-status alien.
In TaxSlayer Pro 2021 and forward, this menu is also accessible from the Main Menu of the tax return under the Deductions menu.
